Welcome to True North: Mind Body Spirit
Mission Statement: To improve the mind, body, and spirit on a daily basis.
True North: MBS is a source of wealth and knowledge that you can turn to and connect with others in search of answers and new concepts.
Our world and our society wants to dictate to you what your reality should be, look, and feel. The only thing is that the world doesn’t KNOW who and what you are. At True North: Mind, Body, Spirit, let’s rediscover what you are and identify the pathway on how to get where you’ve always wanted to be, where you need to be…your True North.
The mind – the source of your dreams and aspirations as well as your fears and doubts. What you continually focus on will eventually be your reality. I love the following from Frank Outlaw:
“Watch your thoughts, they become words;
watch your words, they become actions;
watch your actions, they become habits;
watch your habits, they become character;
watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”
“The man who succeeds must always in mind or imagination live, move, think, and act as if he gained that success, or he never will gain it.” – Prentice Mulford. Our minds are bombarded with information daily. People wake and reach for Facebook or the news first thing. We need to control what goes into our minds…after all…garbage in, garbage out.
As powerful as your mind is, it will quit well before your body does. It will tell your body that it has had enough, that it should power down and reserve energy. I want to start with David Goggins (davidgoggins.com). One the toughest mindsets available. He suggests that we do something that sucks everyday in order for us to callous the mind. So when hardship arrives does arrive to our doorstep, and it will, it will not be nearly as challenging because we’ve conditioned our minds for worse. Watch Tom Bilyeu’s Impact Theory here with David Goggins and be prepared to be blown away…also be prepared to provide earmuffs for the little ones.
The “Mind” page displays products and tools that I use to improve my mind.
Your body is the vehicle you are taking with you to the end. It’s a tremendous machine made of systems that must work together in order to simply survive. The body is built for and craves stress and hard work in order to grow. Place a burden on it through exercise and feed it with good nutrients. Your body will carry out the mission laid before it from the mind. However, if you chose to neglect your body, your body will say “Screw you pal…I’m out.” For those of us facing our 20-year high school reunion, how many of your classmates have just let it go? The stud athletes who simply decided that exercise was something you did during sports or the those that thought that their body’s composition would remain the same despite all the continual changes that take place within the body?
Personally, I know that if I just look at sugar, (M&Ms & Heath to be exact), my body will pack on the pounds. I tailor my meals from Paleo and avoiding breads, pastas, and sugars. My main war is against sugar and I believe there is tremendous research currently being conducted to show that our obesity problems are not calorie problems but sugar problems. There’s also studies showing the effects on cancer cells when it is starved from sugar. Watch “That Sugar Film” for an excellent documentary on this. There are reports also that point to Alzheimer’s Disease as Type III Diabetes.
Do I have cheat days? Yes. On Saturdays. I’m engaged in Intermittent Fasting (IF). I’ll finish my daily “feeding” at 8pm and won’t resume eating until 10am-12pm the following day. In between those times I’ll only drink water and coffee (see Joe Rogan’s YouTube video on Intermittent Fasting for an interesting discussion with Dr. Rhonda Patrick on thoughts about drinking coffee during IF). With that said, I love fueling my body this way. I’m not starving, I use the night hours to assist the fast, and I don’t carry food in my belly all day to slug me down. I love it and I think you should look into it. As with any changes to your diet, if you have any concerns, please consult your physician.
One of the best workout programs I have used is AthleanX by Jeff Cavaliere. He uploads a tremendous amount of content on his YouTube Channel. His program has kept me in great shape for the Army Physical Fitness Test, supported me through my deployment to Afghanistan, and helped me avoid injuries.
The spirit is your energy source. It may be your religion, belief system, or something else entirely, but at the end of the day, it directs my mind and drives my body. My spirit implores me to improve upon myself daily, not to be stagnant, to question life, to seek, and to find answers.
I am Christian. I believe in my Savior, Jesus Christ, and that my spirit, my soul, is His Instant Messenger for me. My guiding light in the dark times and my source of answers during decisions. That works for me and my family. If you have a different preference of a higher being and it works for you, excellent. (Note: This isn’t the forum to get into Theological debates. At the end of the day we’re all humans with the mission to make this world a better place for the next generation of humans). Anyways, if you’re lost and in need of some sort of guidance or direction, start here. That book, while it is not the Bible, helped me get on a path back to where I needed to be. It helped me reunite the relationship with Him that I so desperately needed. At the time I read the book, it helped a scared, frightened, and immature father of two young boys develop into the husband my wife needed and father my kids could depend upon.
I, like most people, love listening to music. I have come to grow extremely fond of Ludovico Einaudi’s music, most notably my favorite Due Tramonti and Nuvole Bianche. It is a must hear. I consider his work my refocusing music. While listening to his music I meditate on my life, where I used to be, where I am, and where I’m going. I think about my family, my beautiful wife, and my aging kids. What kind of husband am I? Am I the best I can be? What about the kind of father am I? Am providing them the direction and lessons they need to live healthy and productive lives?
Has anyone listened to NEEDTOBREATHE? My absolute favorite. If you haven’t, start here.
One area in life I’m always striving to improve upon is financial freedom. Contrary to popular belief, money is NOT the root of all evil…but it WILL MAGNIFY what you currently are. So If you’re a jerk with money, then you’re a rich jerk. If you’re a blessing with money, then you’re a rich blessing. I follow Dave Ramsey and his brand Ramsey Solutions. I have found TONS of Podcast content through Financial Peace University, The Dave Ramsey Show Podcast, Chris LoCurto Podcast, The Ken Coleman Show Podcast, and EntreLeadership Podcast. Needless to say, I highly recommend you take a look.
The Complete Package
Each area is separate but need to work together harmoniously in order for you to truly find your True North: Mind, Body, Spirit.
Join me as I set out to discover a new passion and intensity towards excellence, freedom, and LIFE. I don’t want to lay on my deathbed, reflecting the life I had, and regret not taking chances or wishing I would have when I could. I also want to be an inspiration for my children. I want them to not fear but embrace failure, to know that failure is a step towards success. I want my boys to grow up to be excellent fathers and respectful husbands and live their lives successfully at their accord. I wish my daughter the same, but with the realization of the fierceness and bold determination that is unique with all women. To never be held back by unfounded truths, to never listen to society, and to breakthrough all doubts and shadows casted by an uncalloused mind.
It won’t be overnight and will take hard work and dedication. On the other side of hard work is victory.
